What Are The Best Head Start Child-Care Centers in Ohio?

The Best Head Start Child-Care Centers in Ohio
Eight out of the ten best Child-Care Centers in Summit County have received Ohio’s maximum quality rating. They are called Head Start programs and they are operated by Akron Summit Community Action, Inc. The other two achievers are 1) The Summa Early Education Learning Center and 2) The Goddard School.
These ten facilities have established a 3-star, Step-Quality rating, which is the state's voluntary quality rating system for child-care businesses licensed with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. One-star, two-star, and three-star agencies have surpassed the state of Ohio licensing standards.
Community Action. Inc. offers exciting early education and early childhood growth programs for children, plus a fitness program, a diet program and various other family development services, to roughly 1,600 low-income children ages 6 weeks to 5 years.
People don't always understand what a Head Start child-care center is, explains Alice Marie Ohlin, site supervisor at the Waterloo and Robinson Head Start sites. Head Start is a federally funded early childhood education plan specially crafted for low-income families.
She goes on to say: We offer the very best services in the state. Our child-care centers go beyond what the state of Ohio is asking us to do. In other words, we are giving them the best of the best ---every day.
The three-star rated child-care centers also meet or exceed Ohio’s standards for small classroom education, as well as authoratative staff training. This is in addition to the quality curriculum, monitoring programs, protection plans and early screenings for childhood development problems.
More than half of the Head Start staffers have completed their bachelor’s degree while many others are working toward their degree this summer. This means that quite a few of the staff members will be completing a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education and Family Child Development.
The following best Head Start Centers in Ohio have received the prestigious three-star quality rating:
  • Arlington
  • Cedar Head
  • Five Points I and II
  • Macedonia
  • Waterloo
  • Robinson
  • Portage Path
Oak Creek and Calico, have received accreditation with the National Education of Young Children Association, which has an even higher standard than the state's three-star state rating, officials said.
For parents of youngsters in the Ohio area, Head Start Day Care programs are known as the premiere early education centers for parents meeting the federal poverty level criteria, says Costa.
